One Full Shopping week to go

Here we are folks, it’s almost Christmas 2008. As we look out at the economic landscape and wonder what we can afford to put under the tree this year, the retailers of America are wondering what they can do to get things out of there stores!

America is sitting in a recession and the average shopper is a little more leery of parting with the small amount of money that they have. With job security low and the economic forecast bleak to be kind, American retailers are looking at the worst holiday sales figures they have seen in decades by most accounts. Toy stores, video game retailers, electronics shops and clothing stores have to find a way to make the merchandise they had purchased in preparation for the holidays move out the door and off there books.

So how will the retailers get the American consumers to part with the little bit of money that they have? Simple, they are going to run sales on a massive scale.

As the clock ticks down we will see sales to the tune of 40, 50, 60 and even 75% discounts from the suggested retail prices on all most anything you can think of. The more threatened a store is that the bottom line dollar figures they need to maintain to pay staff and distributors the deeper they will slash the cost to the consumer.

This coming weekend will see the onslaught of massive mega sales. As the days dwindle to the Christmas holiday you will see BoGo’s on an epic scale. Online e-tailers will not want to be left out of the mix and you will see free shipping and deep discounts there as well, though the opportunity to have those gifts under the tree for Christmas morning are starting to fade.

Though we were planning on performing the majority of our holiday shopping weeks ago, we held off knowing full well that the discounts had not yet surface to there full potential. We plan on running our full Christmas shopping list over the next 7 days, with the majority of our concentrated purchasing being performed on next Monday when we suspect the true retailer panic should be at a historic level.

A size 10 boot to the head for Bush

Today as current President Bush visited Iraq and attended a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, he was reminded of how mush he is disliked through out the world. Again I am reminded of how highly he thinks of himself and his policies, and how much of a stark contrast his personal view is from the national and international view of him and his policies. His foreign policy was defined today with a aggressive statement. A size 10 for an exclamation point on the end of it.

Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt shouted in Arabic "This is a farewell kiss, you dog!" as he threw what appeared to be his right shoe and then bent over and pulled his left shoe off took another shot at giving President Bush a boot to the head.

Bush dodged both low velocity shoes easily, though he was visibly shaken after the first shoeing attempt. Each shoe slammed the the American flag against the wall as they stood proudly behind President Bush.

From the video the Flag was the only thing that had the Presidents back. Muntadar al-Zeidi, the would be shoeman was taken down in the video by a fellow journalist. It was after Muntadar al-Zeidi was already down that Secret Service storms into the picture to control the situation.

There are some reports that White House press secretary Dana Perino suffered an eye injury in the news conference melee but I can't seem to find her in the video. Unless she was either behind the flag or under the podium.

The President later played down the situation stating "I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it"

In the Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of absolute contempt. This was evident in 2003 as Iraqis thrashed a statue of Saddam with their shoes after U.S. marines toppled it to the ground.

Facebook Virus Spreading

The name of the virus is "Koobface". It is a Trojan that's been running through Facebook like a California wildfire. To most of us this Trojan is known as "the Facebook virus" since the Trojan only seemed to be resident on Facebook. Unfortunately that containment has now lapsed.

Koobface is now showing up on MySpace, Bebo, Friendster, MyYearbook and even BlackPlanet.Once a users PC is infected with Koobface it spams the users friends with comments on their profiles. Those comments appear to come from the infected user directly. Comments saying things like "Are you sure this is your first acting experience?", "is it u there?", "impressive. i'm sure it's you on this video", "How can anyone get so busted by a spy camera?" and "You're the whole show! i'm admired with you."

Each of the spammed comments are designed to appeal to people's vanity. They question "is that really a video of me?" and out of human nature they click through on the link provided in the spam comment.

The link actually takes them to an off-site page which pretends to offer a video download from "YuoTube," yes the old miss spelling ploy, since it has the same letters most people wont even notice until it is too late. The page then stalls saying that you need a new version of Adobe's Flash Player installed in order to continue.

Of course, if you click the button to proceed with the install, you're infected. Infected users are then directed to even more contaminated web sites when they try to use search engines, which puts them at risk of identity theft, among other things. "Search terms are directed to find-www.net," according to a McAfee spokesman it also"enables ad hijacking and click fraud."

I have removed the link that was in the e-mail originally as I don't want anyone to click on it.

This e-mail showed up like this in the inbox:

From: Internal Revenue Service

Except I have set up our e-mail set up to show the Source Address which made it show up like this:

From: Internal Revenue Service [mailto:service@***-***.com]

(I removed the real website address - I will explain why below)

Now I don't like to point fingers here but in an effort to keep everyone from sending e-mails to this address lets figure out who it is. Or at least who it isn't.

I ran a whois query on the domain that was listed as the sender and got information that showed my suspicion of this email to have been justified. I am sure of one thing, and that is who it is not.

Do I think this is who is responsible for the scam that is being run here? Would you think it was?
I don't think it is. I think someone got into the e-mail database and gave themselves an e-mail address from that server so they could use an address that looked better than IRSGUY @ Hotmail.com

Why do I think that?

When I look at (and I have a habit of doing so allot) the Source code of the link in the e-mail I see that it is pointing at another website all together.

It is pointing to (http://www.*********.com/refund/login.html) (I broke that link too so don't click it)

That website is also not associated with the Treasury or the IRS. Point of the story? Even though many of us are money hungry and looking at our stacking bills and thinking about Santa and the list of items he has to provide this year - don't let some scam artist separate you from you money or identity. Check everything.

Take no link at its cover value - Remember Don't judge a book by it's cover?
Apply the same principle to the links you get in your emails and the ones you find on the web.
